Gadjah Mada University



Gadjah Mada University is the oldest state universities in Indonesia, located in Yogyakarta. Established on December 19, 1949, Gadjah Mada University is the first university established after Indonesia's independence.

History: Formation



Judging from history, University of Gadjah Mada University is a merger and re-establishment of various centers of education, high school, college in Yogyakarta, Klaten and Surakarta.

The name started with the establishment of Gadjah Mada University Gadjah Mada Hall of the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Literature. Establishment of KNI Malioboro published in Building on March 3, 1946 by Mr. Boediarto, Ir. Marsito, Prof. Dr. Prijono, Mr. Soenario, Dr. Soleiman, Dr. Buntaran and Dr. Soeharto.

Since January 4, 1946 Sukarno and Hatta, moved the capital of the Republic of Indonesia to Yogyakarta. With the proliferation of freedom fighters and the fighting between the Allies and NICA in Jakarta and Bandung, the Technical High School (STT) to move to Bandung, Yogyakarta. Other educational institutions which stood at about the same time is the College of Medicine (established March 5, 1946), College of Veterinary Medicine (established 20 September 1946), College of Pharmacy (established 27 September 1946), and College of Agriculture (established 27 September 1946) which are all located in Klaten, about 20 kilometers from Yogyakarta.

Pasteur Institute in Bandung since September 1, 1945, also helped with the laboratory was moved to Klaten Hospital Tegalyoso. One person involved in this transfer is Prof. Dr. M. HOSPITAL who later became rector of Gadjah Mada University first. Campus life in Klaten increasingly crowded with the establishment of the Faculty of Dentistry at the beginning of 1948.

In early May 1948, the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Culture founded the Academy of Political Sciences in Yogyakarta at the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs to educate prospective employees of the Department of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Information. This academy was originally led by Prof. Djokosoetono, S.H. Unfortunately, the academy did not last long, after PKI Madiun uprising erupted, September 1948, the academy was left of his students who took part to quell the rebellion, so the academy was closed.

Furthermore, on 1 November 1948 Expert Legal Education Center was established in Surakarta, as a result of the cooperation the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Culture with the Ministry of Justice. Along with the Establishment Committee of Private Universities in Surakarta, namely Drs. Notonagoro, S.H., Koesoemadi, S.H. and Hardjono, S.H. in Surakarta to plan to establish the High School of Legal Affairs. For the sake of efficiency, the proposed merger of Central Committee of Expert Legal Education into the High School of Legal Affairs is finally approved and endorsed by Government Regulation no. 73 years old in 1948.

Student Activities

Student extracurricular activities

GMU Student Center is the center of activities for the students in Yogyakarta. It's just because it is situated adjacent to the GMU campus is finally identical with the center of activities for students of UGM alone. GMU Student Center was built in the 1970s and had become a center for the activist movement in the 1970s when the GMU Student Council and Student Council as Yogyakarta is still based in the building. Organisation of students: Student Senate

GMU Student Senate is the student's central institution that was established in 1990 with the spirit of student-style governance (Student Government). In this context the Student Senate is one of the organs of GMU Student Family Agency, and serves as legislative bodies and collective stewardship.

For the first time GMU Student Senate was formed in 1990. One Earth



One Earth (Solidarity Technique To Earth) is an activist student organizations outdoor activities of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta. Organization of this nature lovers (usually called Mapala) is one of the largest Mapala community at the University of Gadjah Mada University and established since April 27, 2000.
